About ZOO Science
The origins of ZOO Science
Scientific research is in the DNA of Antwerp ZOO and Planckendael ZOO. Science practiced and applied in our zoos, but also in our research stations abroad, in our lab, under our supervision in universities and, above all, in our zoological research centre the Centre for Research and Conservation (CRC). Since the official start in 2000 the CRC has grown into one of the most advanced zoological research centres worldwide. But how did it start? How did Antwerp ZOO become the first scientific zoo in the world, with its own scientific research centre?

Research disciplines
Our scientists and experts are leaders in their fields, which include genetics, animal behaviour, animal welfare, veterinary medicine and animal morphology. With this expertise we work together in research projects related to three main themes: animal welfare, nature conservation and basic zoology research.
Who is behind ZOO Science?
We practice science in our parks day in, day out. To date this was done rather anonymously and behind the scenes. Who are we? What do we do? And why are we so interested in zoological research? Why do we attach importance to a scientific basis for the daily work in our zoo, and by extension in nature. Let us explain.
