Research themes

  • Animal Husbandry
  • Biodiversity and Systematic Zoology
  • Taxonomy

Responsibilities

As a curator of Aquarium, Reptiles and Marine Mammals I manage a wide variety of animals at ZOO Antwerp & ZOO Planckendael, ranging from invertebrates (both aquatic and terrestrial) over amphibians, fishes and reptiles to the marine mammals.

Extra activities

  • Member of the Aquarium Committee of the European Union of Aquarium Curators
  • Chairman of the Belgian Scientific Committee of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora)
  • Member of the Flemish Zoo Commission
  • Member of the Walloon Zoo Commission
  • Member of the Union des Conservateurs d'Aquariums

Research Interests

My primary focus is on the optimal husbandry and well-being of the animals under my care. Furthermore, I hold an interest in biodiversity and taxonomy mainly of the meiofaunal marine flatworms.

Brief Biography

I obtained a PhD in Zoology at Hasselt University in Belgium. I conducted research on the meiofauna of the Belgian coast, with a focus on the free-living marine flatworms (Platyhelminthes). I’m an honorary fellow at the Faculty of Sciences of Hasselt University, and member of the research group Zoology: Biodiversity and Toxicology.
