Verantwoordelijkheden

Als directeur van het LuiKotale Bonobo Project (LKBP) ben ik verantwoordelijk voor het beheer van de onderzoeksite in de Democratische Republiek Congo (DRC). Samen met Dr. Gottfried Hohmann beheer en begeleid ik de medewerkers en studenten die bij dit project betrokken zijn en coördineer ik het onderzoek waarvan ik de leiding heb. Ik probeer de nodige middelen te verwerven die fundamenteel en toegepast onderzoek en instandhoudingsmaatregelen mogelijk maken. Daarnaast ben ik voltijds verbonden als Associate Professor (Gedrag en instandhouding van primaten) aan de Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), Liverpool (Verenigd Koninkrijk). Ik ben ook verbonden als onderzoeker aan het Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPIEVAN) in Leipzig (Duitsland) (Departement Human Behavior, Ecology and Culture).

Overige activiteiten

Sedert 2011 ben ik voorzitter van de non-profitorganisatie Bonobo Alive (https://www.bonobo-alive.org) die de instandhouding van de bonobo's binnen en buiten het onderzoeksgebied van LuiKotale ondersteunt door te investeren in onderwijs, gemeenschapsontwikkeling en betrokkenheid van de bevolking. Hiervoor onderhoud ik een sterke band met dierentuinen die bonobo's huisvesten, zodat onderzoek kan worden gedaan naar de natuurlijke behoeften van deze soort. Sinds 2009 ben ik lid van de mensapenafdeling (Section of Great Apes) van de Primate Specialist Group van het IUCN/SSC (Uitvoerend Comité).

Onderzoeksinteresses

Mijn onderzoek richt zich voornamelijk op de socio-ecologie van bonobo's, met name met betrekking tot de gelijkenissen en verschillen met hun congeneren, de chimpansees. In dit kader behelst mijn onderzoek een brede waaier aan topics, gaande van ecologie (fenologie van bossen, plantentaxonomie, fytochemie, farmacologie, etnobotanie, zaadverspreiding, roofbouw), ethologie (sociale netwerken, agressie en verstandhouding, seksueel gedrag, nestbouw, gebruik van werktuigen, culturele dierkunde, zoopharmacognosie, communicatie), fysiologie (voeding, endocrinologie, virologie, isotopenonderzoek), genetica (verwantschapsonderzoek, evolutionaire genetica) tot de biologie van dieren in de vrije natuur (tellingen met betrekking tot instandhouding, ontwikkeling van de gemeenschap, dierenwelzijn). In het kader van mijn project ‘The Cuvette Centrale as Reservoir of Medicinal Plants’ https://www.eva.mpg.de/procuv/ (‘Projet Cuvette Centrale’; 2001-2010) heb ik ook een aanzienlijke expertise ontwikkeld in de etnobotanie en traditionele geneeskunde die nu dient als basis om zelfmedicatie van de bonobo beter te begrijpen.

Beknopte biografie

Ik heb Dierkunde, Plantkunde en Paleontologie gestudeerd aan de Universiteit van München waar ik in 1990 mijn Diploma (vergelijkbaar met een MScRes) behaalde met een onderzoek naar de regionale verschillen van nesten, plekken waar zij noten openen en de populatiedichtheid van chimpansees in het zuidwesten van Ivoorkust. In 1995 heb ik mijn master in Dierkunde en Ethologie behaald aan dezelfde universiteit, waarbij ik de ecologische en gedragsmatige correlaties van nesten en nestgroepen bij wilde bonobo's bestudeerde. Van 1996 tot 2001 deed ik het daaropvolgende postdoctoraal onderzoek in het Department of Anthropology van de Miami University Oxford (Ohio, Verenigde Staten) en het Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology in Seewiesen (Duitsland) vooraleer ik het ‘Projet Cuvette Centrale’ opstartte als senior onderzoeker en PI (Principal Investigator). In 2014 behaalde ik aan de Universiteit van München mijn habilitatie (venia legendi). Naast mijn onderwijsverplichtingen lag mijn focus op het gedrag van bonobo's en de zoektocht naar de instandhouding van hun habitat door duurzaam gebruik van planten. Sindsdien ben ik verbonden aan het Centre for Research and Conservation (CRC) van ZOO Antwerpen en ZOO Planckendael, naast mijn activiteit als Associate Professor aan de Universiteit van München. Daarnaast werk ik sinds juni 2016 als Associate Professor (Gedrag en instandhouding van primaten) aan de Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), Liverpool (Verenigd Koninkrijk). Hier onderwijs ik studenten van het L3 (foundation) tot L6 niveau (bachelors) en begeleid ik bachelor-, master- en doctoraatsstudenten. Daarenboven begeleid ik diverse projecten van studenten van over de hele wereld.
